A DEVELOPMENTAL APPROACH:
Helping children and families navigate health journeys
As mental health and medical professionals, many of our child and adolescent clients and their parents share difficult stories about a breadth of health concerns. These may include health worries and fears, allergies, stress-related physical symptoms as well as health conditions that include chronic pain and/or uncomfortable medical procedures.
Using an integrative developmental, systemic, and anti-oppressive approach, Dr. Reid and Dr. Johnson will address the questions we often hear from mental health and medical practitioners colleagues.
- What do practitioners need to understand about the mental health impact of health concerns, medical considerations and chronic and procedural pain?
- What do we know from research and experience regarding the interwoven stressors on children, parents/caregivers, and on medical staff when children are experiencing health concerns and/or distressing pain – whether chronic or acute?
- What are the science-backed, culturally-responsive best practices that mental health professionals can implement with kids and caregivers alike to enhance comfort, “healing,” empowerment, advocacy and action?
- What resources, tools and strategies can practitioners use in mental health or medical practices to help families navigate the individual, family, and systemic challenges around health, pain and healing?
